A new carpet changes everything about a room: how it looks, how warm it feels and even how it sounds. With so many styles to choose from, it helps to know what actually makes a difference. Here’s how we help customers decide.
Start with the room
Think about who uses the room and how. A bedroom sees bare feet and very little traffic, so you can choose a deep, soft pile. A hallway, staircase or family lounge takes far more punishment and needs something tougher.
- Bedrooms: saxony, velvet or a soft twist.
- Living rooms: hard-wearing twists, wool blends or nylon.
- Stairs and hallways: tight twists, loops and patterned carpets that hide wear.
- Kids’ rooms and rentals: stain-resistant polypropylene.
Understand pile types
The “pile” is the surface you walk on. Its construction decides both the look and how well the carpet wears.
- Twist: tightly twisted fibres with a textured finish. Hides footprints and is the everyday all-rounder.
- Saxony: longer, denser pile for a luxurious sink-in feel. Best in lighter-traffic rooms.
- Loop and Berber: uncut loops that create a neat, structured surface. Very durable — though not the best match for pets with long claws.
- Velvet: short, dense cut pile with a smooth sheen. Elegant, but shows shading and footprints more than a twist.
Choose the right fibre
Wool is naturally springy, warm and resilient, and it recovers well from crushing. Polypropylene is tough, affordable and very stain-resistant — many ranges can even be cleaned with a bleach solution. Nylon sits in between: soft to the touch, very hard-wearing and good with furniture marks. Wool blends combine the best of natural and man-made fibres.
If you have pets or young children, ask about stain-resistant ranges. They look just as good and make life far less stressful.
Get the colour right
Colours look very different in a showroom than in your home. So ask to take a look at samples in your own light: look at them in daylight and in the evening, next to your walls and furniture. Mid-tones and flecked or striped designs are the most forgiving; very pale and very dark plain carpets show more marks.
Don’t skimp on underlay
Underlay is the unsung hero of every good carpet. It makes the carpet feel softer, keeps the room warmer, reduces noise and protects the pile from wear. Old underlay loses its bounce, so it usually makes sense to replace it with a new carpet — we’ll tell you honestly if yours is still good.
